Openers - Otwieraczy

The relation between two communities, as well as probably any other kind of relation, is based on the fundamental principle of openness.
I was particularly struck by the information that the only bridge between Frankfurt and Slubice for many years had been closed, simply unaccessible and useless.
The act of opening that bridge inaugurates the possibility itself to conceive a relation between the two communities, and to formulate the hypothesis of a single city, Slubfurt.
My proposal for Slubfurt is to determine and actually bring to an act as many conditions of opening something as possible. For a certain period of time (2 to 4 weeks) a group of persons living in Frankfurt as well as in Slubice will find something that is normally closed (or that they perceive as such), and will do what they can to open it. Ideally everything can be opened: a door, a book, a mechanism, a computer program, a relationship, a mentality, or an individual mind. Things can be opened for a moment, for an extended time, or permanently. Each participant will fulfill as many acts of opening as he/she can. Each act will be announced (via e-mail? in some public space?) possibly before the moment in which it is taking place so that, in the cases when this is possible, it can be performed publicly. Each act will be documented according to the desire of the "opener": video, photo, sound, storytelling... All the documentation will be collected in a dvd-rom.

EVERYTHING I CAN FIND (1999) On March 5, 1999, from 5 pm to 10 pm I have been seated, blindfolded and with my ears plugged, in the space of the gallery "Base", in Florence, and I have described with words each sensation, or perception, or thought, or state of mind, that I have been able to recognise. photo: Studio Cantini, Florence.

LECCE - NEW YORK (1999-2000) In November 1999 I was invited to take part to the exhibition "Out of the Blue" in Lecce, Italy. Being unable to go, I sent the following statement to be exhibited. "Cesare Pietroiusti is an artist who, for family reasons, will spend the next months mostly in New York. Every visitor to this show can ask him (anonimously or not) to do something in New York. Any kind of thing can be requested to be done, except for acts that could result offensive for others or for the artist himself". Fortysix requests were done, and, between March and November 2000, they were carried out. in the photo: "Throw a rose from the Brooklyn Bridge screaming: "New York, me too, I exist! I love you!" (request n.7, made by Felicia)
